shadow play

shadow play

Shadows of past pain darken this doorstep

I can't sweep it away, I can't wash it off, I can't wish it gone

The darkness threatens to enter, over the threshold and into my home

I anticipate it's frosty demeanor and shiver at the thought of it's bitter mood

Even though I know the antidote is to shine a light, I fear the bright focus in my direction

The imperfections will surely show

I never liked playing hide and seek as a kid, I preferred the directness of dodgeball

Games got us here though

Lies and insecurities love the dark corners, hiding in wait, always anticipating the reveal

They cast a shadow much bigger than their original intent, threatening to envelope the entire space

Maybe if you turn your light on first I can follow

Maybe if you turn toward me I will see, even in the dark

Ah maybe flashlight tag is the answer
